This poem was pretty straight forward and didn’t contain any deeper meaning or secret messages. My aim was to write a fun and funny story through poetry. Although some readers have told me that this poem was really random, didn’t make sense, or seemed like I just made it up as I went, I actually made it this way so that I was able to make Bob sound crazy. Taking the paragraph refrain idea from the poem “The Cremation of Sam Mcgee,” I decided to do a similar thing in my poem. In my poem Bob is a man who was looking for a job, but was never able to get one. Readers wouldn’t know why he can never get a job until they read through what happens to Bob whenever he goes out. The unbelievable and crazy of how Bob met Thor was on purpose to make Bob seem crazy. At the end, readers are told that everything that just happened was not real and that Bob had imagined it. I used the appearance of a therapist or doctor at the end to show that Bob legitimately has a problem and needs help. Readers then discover that Bob hallucinates whenever he doesn’t eat his medicine, and that is why he can never find a job.

Bob Wished For a Job By Aaron Ng

Standard

There once was a man whose name was Bob,

And all he ever wished for was a job.

He would wake up every morning with a jolly, big smile on his face,

And say, “I am going to find a job today,” but this was never the case.

One day, Bob decided to go to the grocery shop,

In hope to find work by cutting pork chops,

But before he could get to the grocery store,

He actually believed that he was stopped by Thor.

With an outstretched arm, Thor commandingly said, “come with me,”

And without hesitation Bob took his hand in jubilee.

With their arms interlocked, they rose higher and higher,

Passing people, buildings, and even telephone wires.

That was when Thor said, “I’ve got something important to tell you Bob,

You must go to the mayor’s office and ask for a job.

For I have seen the future, and you must be this city’s leader,

And help this city reach its potential as a world-beater.”

With that, Thor swooped down and dropped Bob at the mayor’s building.

Bob demanded an interview, but was told he would have to pay a shilling.

In the interview, Bob tried to explain his destiny and situation;

That he was specifically chosen by Thor to lead this generation.

The interviewer laughed and giggled, but soon realized Bob was serious.

Furiously, the interviewer left the room and said, “You are delirious.”

For the next few hours, Bob wouldn’t leave and tried to argue his point;

That Thor was not one who he could disappoint.

The people in the building decided to call the police,

In hope that they could help their problems decrease.

As the police arrived and tried to push Bob into the police car,

He screamed, “You are all going to regret not hiring a rising star.”

After being bailed out by his friend,

Bob embarrassingly muttered, “Thank you Doctor Bertrand.”

Once they were out of the police station,

Bob’s doctor asked out in frustration,

“Bob, did you not eat your medicine today,

How else are you going to find a job someday?”
